Jeff Lisandro wins WSOP Player of the Year
   lpblog, July 12

It won't surprise many, but now it's official: Jeff Lisandro wins the World Series of Poker Player of the Year. The only player who could take the lead, Ville Wahlbeck, has been knocked out in day 3, failing to make the money and thus failing to score points and get the lead. With no more events left, that means, Lisandro has won it, and rightfully so.

It's the first time this honor goes to Lisandro, although he got pretty close before. In 2007 he ended as 2nd place after Tom “DonkeyBomber” Schneider. This year, his 3 bracelets prove to be enough to win it. Here's the impressive list of the results that gave Lisandro the title:

    # Event 6 - $10,000 - World Championship 7 Card Stud - 9th place
    # Event 16 - $1,500 - 7 Card Stud - 1se place
    # Event 27 - $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo - 17th place
    # Event 35 - $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha - 33rd place
    # Event 37 - $10,000 World Championship 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo - 1st place
    # Event 44 - $2,500 7 Card Razz - 1st place

His dominance in Stud events was what gave him the title. What he actually gets for his win (apart from the honor of course), is still unknown. Last year's winner, Erick Lindgren, got a nice motorcycle he always wanted to get. This year, they will try to find something suitable for Lisandro, so the price will be announced later.

Cutsss and ElkY chipleaders after day 3 WSOP ME
   lpblog, July 11

This is just a copy of the frontpage news, to keep the blog complete.

Day 3 of the Main Event has been played, and we're almost in the money. This is when you want to excel and that's exactly what our fellow LiquidPoker-players did. With Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier as chipleader, and Ludovic "Cutsss" Lacay as 2nd in chips, the two French players are dominating the field that still has a few other LiquidPoker-players in as well.

As scheduled, we would play down from 2,044 to around 800 and by 0.30 AM it was done. 810 players remained while over 1200 left the field. Only 162 to go before we're in the money, and still a lot of world-class players are in the field. Yesterday we saw Phil Ivey amongst the chipleaders, today he hasn't earned much and is still in with 371,000, about 1.5 times the average stack. This was also due to the fact that he got placed on the table with ElkY, not the table you want to be on , although that probably goes both ways. From last year's final table, Dennis Phillips, Kelly Kim and Peter Eastgate are still in, they're all with with an above average stack. Other notable players still in? Phil Hellmuth, Isaac "WestmenloAA" Baron, Cole "CTS" South, Justin Bonomo, Sorel "Imper1um" Mizzi, Kevin "BeL0WaB0Ve" Saul, Kenny Tran, Chris Ferguson, Vitaly Lunkin, JC Tran, Joe Sebok, Paul Wasicka, Andy Black, David Williams, just to name a few.

For LiquidPoker-players, it wasn't a bad day, even though we lost a few players. Of course, ElkY and Cutsss are chipleaders, but a lot of other players are still in as well (if we miss any, please let us know):

    Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier 1,380,500
    Ludovic "Cutsss" Lacay 896,000
    Blair Hinkle 542,000
Patrick "BigRed0000" Stemper (listed as Patric Stamper on wsop.com ) 480,000
    Julian “thewh00sel” Parmann 373,500
    Christopher "chris" Giannell - 373,000
    Brian "BJLTNYK" Taylor 331,000
    Hevad "RaiNKhAN" Khan 272,500
    Markus "LURPED" Gonsalves 211,000
    Quentin "MiPwnYa" Lae - 164,000
    Benjamin "straate" Straate 51,000

One of the best hands of the day had to be a sick calldown by thewh00sel, described in his blog:

I started the day with 200k in chips and after the 2nd to last level of the day I had only 100k left. I get back at 1500 3k and stack a 55k stack with aa vs ak. Then I chip up to 240k. Then this hand happens. I raise 44 utg to 7200. Owen crowe defends the bb. Flop is Qs 8c 2c. Owen checks I cbet 9500. He raises to 25k. I call. Turn is an 8s. He fires 50k. I'm pretty sure I have the best hanf but for whatever reason I just call instead of shoving 150k more. The river is a 3 of spades completing a backdoor flush and owen shoves. He had been shoving a lot of rivers with the nuts and been overall sick aggro so I think for a few seconds and call off all my chips and he had a 37o. So my biggest pot of the tourney I won with a pair of fours. After that I chipped down a bit and ended the day at 373k with 800 people left.

Nice hand! Best of luck to who's still playing the Main Event. Today we'll see who makes the money, let's hope all the above do. They will play down to 400 players, or 4 levels, whichever happens first and it will start again at 12.00PM local time. Live updates will be shown on the WSOP-website, as are the chipcounts.

Main Event update
   lpblog, July 10

The World Series of Poker Main Event has come to its first break. With 4 days called day 1 (A, B, C and D) and 2 second days (A and B) behind us, it's finally some more clear who's doing well and who has already left us. A total of 6494 players entered the event, making the first prize a sweet 8.5 million dollar. We already see some big names in the top chipcounts, but even more have been eliminated so far.

Day 2A had only a relatively small field. As players from day 1A and 1B continued to 2A, only 1476 started this day. Players like Gus Hanson, Mike Matusow, Gavin Smith, Phil Laak (joined by Jennifer Tilly), Barry Greenstein, Dewey Tomko and many more left the field. Only 630 survived day 2A and we had Eric Cloutier as chipleader.

This was much different from day 2B. As day 1D was already completely sold out, and many of them survived to day 2, it gave the staff a hard time getting the tables right. Normally, they anticipate for up to 2800 players, but with the 2,924 players that made it to day 2B some extra tables had to be dragged in. About 10 hours later, more than half of them had left the room and it got a lot easier to manage. At the end of the day, we saw Amir Lehavot arise as the chipleader, but amongst the top 10, Phil Ivey was the most notable name. And he's not the only famous player that survived. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier was also in the top chipcounts, as were Jeff Lisandro, Justin Bonomo and David Benyamine.

With the 1094 survivors, added to the 630 from day 2A, it got to a total of 1724 players that will be playing day 3 today. We're unsure how much of them are actually LiquidPoker players, the field is just still too big to go through so if you're still in, or know fellow LP-players who are still in, please post it below and we'll be sure to watch them for the next days. We wish all players who are playing today the best of luck, and let's hope we'll see many of them in the money later today or tomorrow

For the chipcounts, take a look at the survivors of day 2A and day 2B.
